What Is Web Hosting? Shared, VPS, and Managed Hosting Explained

Web hosting is the service that stores your website and sends it to people when they visit your domain.
A domain is the address, such as example.com. Hosting is the computer and related services behind that address. You usually need both, although some website builders bundle them together.
For most small business websites, hosting does not need to be complicated. A basic plan is often enough for service pages, contact forms, photos, blog posts, and normal local traffic.
The three main types of hosting
The hosting labels can sound more technical than they really are. Here is the simple version.
Shared hosting
Shared hosting puts many customer accounts on the same server. Each account gets its own files and control panel, but the accounts share the server's processor, memory, and storage system.
I think of it like renting an apartment. You have your own space, but the building and major systems are shared.
This is usually the right starting point for:
- Local business websites
- Small WordPress sites
- Blogs and portfolios
- Restaurant and contractor sites
- Low-traffic online stores
- A business launching its first website
Shared hosting providers place limits on CPU, memory, disk activity, and simultaneous processes. Those limits matter more than a giant storage allowance. If a site repeatedly hits them, it may slow down or return an error until demand drops. (namecheap.com)
The downside is that you have less control. A poorly optimized plugin, a traffic spike, or a resource-heavy task can expose the limits of the plan. But that does not mean every small site should jump straight to a VPS.
VPS hosting
A virtual private server, or VPS, gives you a defined share of a larger physical server. You normally receive specific amounts of RAM, CPU capacity, storage, and monthly data transfer.
This is closer to renting a townhouse. The physical property is still shared, but your resources and responsibilities are more clearly separated.
A VPS makes sense when a site or application needs:
- More consistent resources
- Custom server software
- Background workers or scheduled jobs
- Several busy websites
- An API or web application
- More control over server settings
A VPS is not automatically the best upgrade. It can also create more work. Someone must handle software updates, security, backups, monitoring, and server configuration unless management is included.
Hosting companies may charge separately for a control panel, extra storage, additional IP addresses, backups, or server management. Monthly traffic can also have a firm limit instead of being described as unmetered. (namecheap.com)
I would not put an ordinary five-page business website on a VPS just because it sounds more powerful. I would first confirm that the current site is actually hitting a measurable resource limit.
Managed hosting
Managed hosting means the provider handles more of the technical work. The exact service depends on the company and plan.
Managed WordPress hosting, for example, may include a simplified dashboard, caching, WordPress updates, backups, security tools, and support from people familiar with WordPress. Namecheap describes its EasyWP product as managed WordPress hosting and provides dashboard access for backups, files, database tools, and security features. (namecheap.com)
The tradeoff is less flexibility. A managed platform may restrict certain plugins, server settings, email functions, or direct system access.
Managed hosting is useful when the business owner does not want to maintain the server. It can also be worth paying more if good support saves hours of troubleshooting.
Just read what “managed” includes. It might mean full application support, or it might mean only that the provider maintains the underlying server.
What a small business website usually needs
My default recommendation is to start small and leave room to upgrade.
A brochure-style business site normally needs:
- Enough storage for the site and properly sized images
- A free SSL certificate for HTTPS
- Reliable backups with a clear restore process
- Current PHP and database support if it uses WordPress
- Basic security and malware controls
- Support that responds when the site is unavailable
- A nearby data center or a content delivery network
- A plan that can be upgraded without rebuilding the site
It probably does not need dozens of CPU cores, hundreds of gigabytes of storage, a dedicated server, or an expensive traffic package on day one.
Traffic alone also does not tell the whole story. A cached page with optimized images can be inexpensive to serve. A badly built page with several database-heavy plugins can use far more resources with fewer visitors.
Before paying for stronger hosting, I would look at the website itself. Large images, unnecessary plugins, slow database queries, and third-party scripts are common performance problems that a larger plan may only hide.

The hosting specs that actually matter
CPU, RAM, and process limits
These decide how much work the site can do at once. They matter for WordPress dashboards, ecommerce, search tools, imports, backups, and traffic spikes.
Shared hosts do not always display these limits prominently. Check the knowledge base or ask support for the CPU, physical memory, input/output, and entry-process limits.
Backups and restores
“Backups included” is not enough detail.
I want to know:
- How often backups run
- How long they are retained
- Whether files and databases are both included
- Whether restoring costs extra
- Whether I can download my own copy
- Whether backups count against storage
Provider backups should not be the only copy. For example, Namecheap says EasyWP server backups are created daily and retained for up to 14 days, but it also says customers remain responsible for maintaining their own copies. (namecheap.com)
Storage type and limits
SSD or NVMe storage is preferable to older spinning disks, especially for database-driven sites. But the amount of storage is often oversold.
A normal small business site may use far less space than the entry plan includes. Video, large downloadable files, years of email, and uncompressed photos are what make storage grow quickly.
Also check inode limits. An inode roughly represents a file or folder. A plan advertised with “unmetered” storage can still have file-count and backup restrictions. Namecheap, for example, documents conditions tied to disk usage and inode counts in its hosting policy. (namecheap.com)
Renewal cost
The checkout total matters, but the renewal total matters more.
Look for:
- First-term price
- Renewal price
- Length of the initial commitment
- Cost of required add-ons
- Refund terms
- Migration fees
I would rather pay a clear, sustainable rate than move the website every year to chase another introductory offer.
Support and access
Check when support is available and how you can reach it. Also confirm that you can access the files and database.
Even if I never plan to move the site, I want a practical exit path. SFTP access, database exports, and downloadable backups make migrations much easier.
Marketing claims I mostly ignore
“Unlimited” or “unmetered”
These words rarely mean there are no limits. CPU, RAM, process, inode, acceptable-use, and backup rules can still apply.
Huge storage allowances
Storage does not make a website faster. A small site does not become better because its plan includes space it will never use.
Visitor estimates
A provider may say a plan supports a certain number of monthly visitors. Treat that as a rough recommendation, not a performance guarantee. Namecheap says its EasyWP visitor figures are recommendations and that actual capacity depends partly on how well the site is optimized. (namecheap.com)
Bundled AI tools

A long list of free extras
A free domain, mailbox, SSL certificate, or migration can be useful. I still check what renews separately and whether the feature is something the business actually needs.
A simple way to choose
I would use this order:
- Start with shared hosting for a basic business site or small WordPress installation.
- Choose managed hosting if convenience, backups, updates, and specialized support are worth more than server flexibility.
- Move to a VPS when real usage data or application requirements show that shared hosting is no longer enough.
- Consider dedicated or cloud infrastructure only when the business has traffic, security, compliance, or software needs that justify it.
There is no prize for buying the largest server. The right hosting plan is the least complicated one that keeps the website secure, responsive, backed up, and easy to maintain.

For most small business sites, I would still begin with the basic shared option rather than buying a VPS simply because it has a coupon. A discount only saves money when the product fits the job.
